TSMC 3nm capacity accelerates to 180K wafer starts by early Q4 2026, ahead of schedule

TSMC accelerated its 3nm node capacity timeline on August 3, 2026, per TrendForce reporting. The company expects to reach 180,000 monthly wafer starts at 3nm by early Q4 2026, a target originally planned for year-end. This represents a 20% increase over TSMC's first-half 2026 run rate of approximately 150,000 wafer starts per month and signals TSMC's confidence in sustained AI accelerator demand through 2027.

At 180,000 monthly wafer starts on the 3nm node, TSMC is putting tens of millions of potential AI accelerator cores into its production pipeline monthly. The acceleration is driven directly by order pressure from Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom, whose AI chips, custom ASICs, and flagship silicon have consumed 3nm capacity faster than TSMC's own projections anticipated. TSMC also confirmed its 1.4nm fab (A14) in Taichung is ahead of schedule, with the first building expected to complete before April 2027 and potential pilot production by Q3 2027.

For 2nm capacity (which began volume production in Q4 2025), TSMC expects to reach 80,000 to 90,000 wafer starts monthly by early Q4 2026, up from 50,000-60,000 in the first half. Combined 2nm + 3nm capacity could exceed 260,000 wafer starts monthly by early Q4 2026. This sustained ramp reflects chip industry consensus: AI accelerator shipments are projected to rise 11x between 2022 and 2026, and extremely large dies exceeding 500 mm² are projected to grow 6x over the same period.

TSMC's capacity gains have enabled it to raise 3nm pricing 15% in the second half of 2026, with potential additional increases of 5-10% in 2027. At advanced nodes (7nm and below), TSMC controls ~70% of foundry revenue and is expected to hold 60-65% of advanced-node share. For GPU and AI chip architects, this signals physical constraint relief through early 2027: Nvidia and AMD will have more wafer allocation for Blackwell, Vera Rubin, and next-gen designs.
