Desktop CPU shipments crater 20% YoY; AMD hits record 34.9% share despite market collapse

Desktop CPU shipments in Q2 2026 fell over 20% year-over-year and declined quarter-over-quarter due to component scarcity and high motherboard, memory, and SSD prices, marking what Mercury Research calls 'the ugliest segment of the market.' Despite overall AMD and Intel both suffering significant annual declines, AMD gained share in every category, pushing its x86 desktop CPU market share to a record 34.9%, up from 33.2% in Q1 and 32.2% a year earlier.

AMD's share gains came not from strong absolute sales but from smaller shipment declines compared to Intel—a relative-strength story rather than real growth. AMD increased its market share by 1.8 percentage points sequentially and 2.7 points year-over-year while its own desktop volumes declined. The broader x86 market (including client, server, mobile, and IoT/SoCs) grew 10% quarter-over-quarter overall, driven by strong data center and laptop processor shipments, but the desktop segment remains severely constrained by limited graphics card availability and high component costs.

Teams architecting for consumer-facing AI inference or edge models should note this as a signal of market stress, not opportunity: desktop replacement cycles have contracted, and enthusiast systems—often early adopters of custom AI workloads—are on hold. Intel, despite shipping millions more mobile CPUs than Q1, still lost share to AMD in notebooks and lost further ground in desktops, signaling sustained AMD momentum even in a declining market.
