Throne Science, an AI-powered health startup, raised $10 million in Series A led by Will Ventures, with participation from Emerson Collective, Workshop, LEAD VC, Salt VC, Accomplice, and Moxxie Ventures. The company, founded in 2023 by CEO Scott Hickle, CTO Tim Blumberg, and Whoop co-founder John Capodilupo, builds a toilet-mounted camera system that uses computer vision to analyze stool and urine for health metrics. Total funding now stands at nearly $18 million.
Throne uses a pipeline of a dozen computer vision models, some trained by practicing gastroenterologists, to assess stool form, hydration, and other gut-health markers. This month, the company introduced a beta Gut Health AI coach powered by LLMs that conducts conversational interviews after poor health episodes, asking about diet, stress, and sleep to identify patterns. Throne is pursuing three revenue streams: direct-to-consumer sales, clinician channels (particularly functional-medicine practitioners), and academic/pharmaceutical research.
The longer-term ambition is to function as an at-home "smoke detector for colon cancer," detecting early-warning changes for colorectal, bladder, and kidney cancers—though this capability remains under development. For practitioners in health tech and biotech, Throne represents the emerging category of passive longitudinal health tracking: moving beyond wearables to capture continuous, objective digestive data that traditionally depended on patient self-reporting. Early validation studies underway at Harvard, Stanford, and University of Chicago may provide credibility in both consumer and clinical channels.
