Situational Awareness commits $500M to Source Foundry, bet on rival to ASML's lithography dominance

Situational Awareness, the AI-infrastructure-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has invested $500 million into Source Foundry, a stealth-mode startup developing advanced chip manufacturing tools. The investment includes a fresh $400 million injection this week, according to reporting from Anissa Gardizy and the Wall Street Journal. Source Foundry aims to challenge ASML, the Dutch monopoly seller of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines used for cutting-edge AI chip fabrication.

Situational Awareness had grown to $45 billion in assets at the start of July, riding a 439% net return in H1 2026 from concentrated bets on AI infrastructure (SK Hynix, Sandisk, Micron, CoreWeave). The fund suffered a catastrophic drawdown in late July after its short positions in software stocks moved against it and its long positions in memory/GPU/datacenter names collapsed. Citadel rescued the fund's public-equity positions. However, the $500M Source Foundry bet signals Aschenbrenner is deploying private capital to double down on his core thesis: AI scaling requires vast expansion of semiconductor supply, and bottlenecks in fab capacity and manufacturing equipment are existential constraints.

ASML holds near-total dominance over EUV tool sales, the most critical step in node scaling. A functional competitor would disrupt geopolitical leverage and pricing power. Source Foundry's stealth status and the scale of Situational Awareness' bet suggest the startup is pursuing either breakthrough EUV design or novel lithography approaches. The timing is aggressive: fab expansion timelines are already measured in years, and the tooling bottleneck is widely acknowledged across TSMC, Samsung, and Intel leadership.

Situational Awareness' private-markets turn reflects both the hedge fund's thesis conviction and its operational reality: public markets punished infrastructure plays hard in late July; hedge-fund redemption pressures force faster deployment of dry powder. If Source Foundry achieves even modest EUV progress (e.g., 50% yield improvement, faster throughput), it becomes a $10B+ company and could reshape fabs' capex economics. For now, this is a high-conviction bet on the scarcest link in the AI supply chain.
