River AI closes $1.1B seed/Series A for open-weight model reinforcement learning at 15–20 min training

River AI, founded by xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin, raised $1.1 billion in a combined seed and Series A round led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with strategic participation from NVIDIA and AMD Ventures, plus Y Combinator and Temasek. The round ranks in the top 1% of early-stage VC deals on record—an extraordinarily large sum for a company founded earlier in 2026.

River's API lets any enterprise complete complex reinforcement learning training runs in 15 to 20 minutes with no infrastructure team required, at two to four times the cost savings versus closed-source alternatives. The platform supports models from 35B to 1 trillion parameters and handles LoRA fine-tuning and reinforcement learning for frontier open-weight models, with token-metered billing to eliminate idle GPU costs.

Babuschkin brings heavyweight credentials—Google DeepMind research on generative modeling and RL, OpenAI leadership of large-scale training, and xAI co-founder role. His thesis: the enterprise market will shift from off-the-shelf offerings to privately owned, customized open-weight models. The founding team draws from xAI and Tesla, with rare execution depth across the full AI stack.

For builders, River targets the gap between frontier proprietary models (which offer high capability but create long-term constraint) and in-house custom training (which requires years of ML infrastructure expertise). The massive early-stage capital and hardware maker backing signal conviction that open-weight customization is shifting ownership of intelligence from labs to enterprises.
