July broke venture records: 14 billion-dollar rounds, $65B capital, 53% to AI

Global venture funding hit $65 billion in July 2026, up 100% year-over-year and the third-largest funding month of 2026. The month saw a record 14 billion-dollar rounds across a single month—the highest count on record. Fourteen startups raised billion-dollar checks, with nine from the U.S., two from Germany, two from China, and one from Singapore. The largest was Blue Origin's $10 billion external financing round. Safe Superintelligence (founded by former OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever) raised $5 billion from Nvidia; Moonshot AI raised $3.5 billion after releasing Kimi K3; and Kling AI secured $2.8 billion for short-video generation.

Artificial intelligence captured $35 billion of the $65 billion total—53% of global venture capital—signaling that mega-rounds are clustering in AI. The U.S. accounted for $39 billion (59% of global VC), with roughly half flowing to AI-focused companies. Other hot sectors included aerospace, defense, and energy. The trend reflects a venture ecosystem consolidating capital in category leaders while recycling cash through exits: July saw $9 billion in venture-backed M&A and 12 IPOs of venture-backed companies above $1 billion, including Chinese chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies' $85 billion debut (which surged 466%).

For practitioners, this signals two dynamics: (1) AI labs and infrastructure now soak up half of all institutional venture capital globally, indicating major capital concentration in frontier and enterprise AI. (2) The exit velocity is accelerating—mega-rounds are no longer one-time events but part of a repeating cycle, meaning the ecosystem is maturing and returning capital. If this pace holds, expect higher burn rates and more aggressive timelines across funded AI companies.
