Jeff Dean, Ghemawat, Le, Vinyals depart Google to launch Discovery Loop; Alphabet funds AI research automation startup

Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean, fellow senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, Google Brain co-founder Quoc Le, and DeepMind research VP Oriol Vinyals are leaving Google after a combined century of tenure to launch Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation aimed at automating the scientific method itself. The team plans to use AI to propose, run, and iterate thousands of experiments in parallel, targeting machine learning research first, then scaling to engineering, materials science, medicine, and clean energy. Dean, Google's 30th employee who joined in 1999, will serve as CEO.

Discovery Loop's seed round is co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, and Doerr Capital. Uniquely, Google's parent Alphabet is a founding investor and compute partner, providing infrastructure for at least the first year. The round valuation and total raise were not disclosed at announcement, though the round remained open. This represents one of the most pedigreed AI founder exits in 2026, following broader summer departures from Google DeepMind (Demis Hassabis stepping to chair, Koray Kavukcuoglu promoted to SVP).

For architects building on AI infrastructure: Discovery Loop's formation signals that researchers who built Google's distributed-systems foundation (MapReduce, Bigtable, Spanner) and modern AI stack (TensorFlow, AlphaFold, Gemini) now prioritize autonomous research acceleration over quarterly earnings. Alphabet's willingness to fund ex-employees and cede compute suggests strategic confidence in Discovery Loop as a research vehicle. The startup's focus on parallel experimentation could reshape how research teams model compute requirements and iteration velocity.
