Databricks raises strategic funding at $188bn valuation; Coatue-led round funds Unity AI Gateway and Lakebase expansion
Databricks announced strategic funding at a $188 billion valuation, with Coatue leading and new plus existing investors joining. The round (term sheet signed, expected to close summer 2026) will accelerate the company's multi-AI strategy: Unity AI Gateway (multi-AI governance and cost control), Genie (AI coworker turning business data into answers), and Lakebase (serverless Postgres DB for AI agents). The company serves 20,000+ organizations including 70% of Fortune 500 (adidas, AT&T, Bayer, Block, Mastercard, Rivian, Unilever).
CEO Ali Ghodsi framed the funding around a market shift: enterprises are moving from 'tokenmaxxing' (using the smartest model for every task) to 'valuemaxxing' (best outcome per dollar). This reflects architects' growing focus on multi-model inference efficiency and cost governance. Databricks integrates data and AI on agent-ready infrastructure, solving the 'context gap' where data remains scattered and disconnected from AI systems, preventing teams from controlling cost, security, and reliability at scale.
The capital will also fund future AI acquisitions and deepen research. Databricks' platform consolidates lakehouse infrastructure, Unity Catalog, Agent Bricks, and observability. At $188B valuation, Databricks joins the upper echelon of private AI infrastructure companies alongside Stripe, SpaceX, and Figma — and signals sustained venture appetite for data+AI platform consolidation over pure model plays.
