Anthropic files confidentially for IPO at $965B valuation after $65B Series H; leapfrogs OpenAI

Anthropic confidentially filed for an IPO with the SEC on June 1, 2026, after closing a $65 billion Series H funding round at a $965 billion post-money valuation, surpassing OpenAI for the first time. The Series H was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, with co-leadership from Capital Group, Coatue, D1 Capital, GIC, ICONIQ, and XN. The round includes $15 billion of previously committed hyperscaler investments, including $5 billion from Amazon (with up to $20 billion more available). Anthropic has raised approximately $125 billion in total funding to date.

The filing positions Anthropic ahead of OpenAI in the race to public markets. OpenAI, despite raising $122 billion in private funding (bringing its valuation to $852 billion in March), remains private. Anthropic plans to use proceeds to advance safety and interpretability research, expand compute capacity to meet Claude demand, and scale products and partnerships. The company achieved $47 billion in run-rate revenue in May 2026 and is expected to reach operating profitability with a 130% revenue surge. The May 28 launch of Claude Opus 4.8 improved agentic task, advanced coding, and honesty/self-correction capabilities.

For practitioners tracking frontier AI funding: Anthropic's $965B valuation and first-mover IPO advantage signal investor confidence in Claude's enterprise traction and compute cost economics. However, near-trillion-dollar public valuations require sustained revenue growth and margin expansion to justify multiples that assume decades of high-margin frontier-model licensing. Anthropic committed to $100 billion+ cumulative compute spend over the next 10 years across AWS, SpaceX, Google/Broadcom partnerships, locking in infrastructure capacity but also tying long-term growth to those suppliers' execution. Confidential filing gives Anthropic a regulatory review window before full prospectus disclosure, reducing time pressure and allowing SEC feedback before public pricing.
