RTX 5090 premiums spiral to 115% above MSRP as VRAM costs soar

NVIDIA's flagship RTX 5090 gaming GPU has seen dramatic price escalation in August 2026, with street pricing reaching $4,288 to $5,112 globally—a 114–156% premium over the $1,999 MSRP. Tom's Hardware reported South Korean retailers listing the card at 7.3 million won ($5,112), a single-month jump of 1.5 million won ($1,050). U.S. retailers show similar premiums, with the lowest available models starting at $3,799 at Newegg.

The price surge traces to supply constraints in GDDR7 memory, where AI data centers are outbidding consumer hardware for allocation. TrendForce confirmed manufacturers are directing capacity toward HBM and server products, leaving limited supply for gaming memory and pushing per-module costs above $20. Board partners MSI, ASUS, and Gigabyte all applied surcharges over their already-elevated MSRPs, with custom models like the Asus ROG Astral hitting $5,000+ in some markets. Even Nvidia's own cancellation of a reseller's $4,429 order earlier this month due to a $500 price increase underscores internal pressure.

For data-center operators and GPU buyers: the RTX 5090 premium is a leading indicator of VRAM scarcity that will ripple through other tiers. AMD's RX 9070 XT shows smaller premiums (15–20% above launch), suggesting Nvidia's 32GB GDDR7 design is disproportionately squeezed. Relief depends on HBM allocation returning to consumer channels or GDDR7 fab capacity expansion—neither imminent by current reports.
