Pinterest shares fall 7% on tepid Q3 guidance despite Q2 beat and $4B AWS AI deal

Pinterest reported Q2 2026 earnings that beat analyst expectations, with EPS of $0.43 (vs. $0.36 consensus) and revenue of $1.18 billion (vs. $1.15B expected), representing 18% revenue growth year-over-year. Global monthly active users hit 640 million, up 11% YoY, and adjusted EBITDA reached $311 million. CEO Bill Ready attributed momentum to AI, saying it was trained on Pinterest's unique human curation and is accelerating personalization for users and performance for advertisers. However, Q3 guidance of $1.19–1.21 billion (midpoint $1.2B) came in line with analyst consensus, causing shares to fall 7% in extended trading.

The revenue beat and user growth came amid a $4 billion AWS infrastructure commitment announced earlier, the largest in Pinterest's history through 2031. The deal is expected to accelerate Pinterest's AI roadmap and improve search and shopping experience on the platform. The company also has a $3.5 billion share repurchase program and a $1 billion strategic investment from Elliott Investment Management announced in March. Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 26.3%, and free cash flow hit $270 million.

For platform teams and investors, the sell-off on lukewarm guidance suggests market appetite for growth, not just profitability: Pinterest's 18% revenue growth and 11 consecutive quarters of double-digit MAU growth weren't enough to sustain momentum on Q3 guidance at consensus levels. The AWS deal underscores infrastructure spend as table-stakes for AI acceleration, signaling that social platforms now compete on compute/data infrastructure, not just product features. Watch for guidance raises in coming quarters as AI monetization materializes.
