NIST Proposes Ultrastable Lunar Lasers for Navigation and Timekeeping

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology has proposed a concept for deploying ultrastable laser systems in lunar dark craters to support precision navigation, atomic clock synchronization, and foundational timing infrastructure for future lunar bases. The proposal combines quantum metrology with space infrastructure, addressing timing precision limits that compound errors in long-range autonomous systems.

For aerospace and timing-critical system architects: lunar-based atomic clocks could anchor next-generation positioning systems that don't rely on terrestrial GPS, reducing latency and drift in autonomous spacecraft and deep-space probes. This is a 5–7 year research push, not near-term deployment.
