Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra told CNBC's Mad Money that artificial intelligence has fundamentally altered the memory business, transforming it from a cyclical commodity into a strategic foundation. 'Today there is no AI without memory. AI systems need more memory. They need higher performance memory. They need lower power memory,' Mehrotra said. 'The value of memory, that equation has totally changed.'
Mehrotra credited AI demand with shifting memory from a spot-market commodity to a long-term strategic partnership model. The company has signed five-year strategic agreements with 16 customers, with data-center customers currently requesting roughly 50% more supply than Micron can commit. This multi-year commitment structure contrasts with memory's historical boom-and-bust cycles driven by spot-price bidding.
Micron is backing this narrative with a $250 billion U.S. manufacturing investment, including two new fabs near Boise, Idaho—each roughly the size of 10 football fields. The first Boise fab is expected to begin wafer production in mid-2027. Mehrotra expects demand to extend beyond data centers into autonomous vehicles, robots, and AI-enabled consumer devices.
For architects planning inference and training infrastructure, Mehrotra's comments signal sustained HBM and DRAM scarcity: data-center customers want 50% more supply than Micron will provide in the near term, and multi-year contracts are becoming the standard. This implies capacity constraints and price stability (at higher levels) for the next 18-24 months.
