Hedge funds face worst July on record as AI selloff forces margin calls, Situational Awareness collapses to $10B

Major hedge funds suffered severe losses in July 2026 following a sharp selloff in AI and semiconductor stocks. Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness fund, which peaked at $45 billion in early July, posted a devastating 67% loss for the month, forcing liquidation of nearly all public holdings. The fund's AUM plummeted to approximately $10 billion by month's end. Whale Rock Capital's flagship fund fell 21.7% in July, cutting its 2026 gains nearly in half (from 72.5% YTD to 35.1%). Asia-focused equity hedge funds suffered their worst month on record, with some funds like Hel Ved Capital, E20 Capital, Valliance, and WT Asset Management posting double-digit losses after stellar H1 2026 performance.

The selloff spread broadly: memory chip makers SK Hynix fell over 30%, Kioxia plunged nearly 50%, and AI infrastructure companies including Nebius, SanDisk, and CoreWeave—all Situational Awareness holdings—dropped over 35%. Wall Street's major prime brokers (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America) issued margin calls to hedge funds with concentrated AI positions, requiring additional collateral. Goldman Sachs noted that it was the first day since 2020 when all major hedge fund strategy groups declined by more than 1% simultaneously. Losses extended to multistrategy funds like Point72 (down 3.3% in July) and Coatue, signaling broad positioning stress, not isolated exposure.

The implosion of Situational Awareness exemplifies the danger of crowded, leveraged AI infrastructure bets. Aschenbrenner's thesis—that AI demand would necessitate vast capex in chips, power, and data centers—was sound, but the fund was levered, concentrated, and caught on the wrong side of a momentum reversal. Citadel acquired Situational Awareness' entire public stock book as a forced liquidation. The reversal mirrors dot-com era patterns: rapid euphoria, concentration risk (the S&P 500's top 10 now represent ~40% of the index, exceeding early-2000s levels), and fast de-risking when sentiment shifts.

For practitioners: This month documents two critical lessons. First, even sound theses fail under leverage and crowding. Second, hedged infrastructure-sector plays with low portfolio diversification and high correlation to single-factor bets (AI spending) become forced sellers in sharp corrections. Architects should ask clients: how much of their AI infrastructure procurement decision-making is being driven by hedge fund margin calls, not underlying demand? That answer matters for capex timing.
