China quant crash sends DeepSeek founder's $10B fund down 20% in July; AI bubble fears grip hedge funds

China's quantitative hedge funds suffered steep losses in July after a rout in stocks linked to artificial intelligence, pushing some funds into the red for the year and leaving others doing little better than benchmark stock indexes. DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng's Zhejiang High-Flyer Asset Management, which oversees more than 70 billion yuan (US$10 billion), saw its CSI 1000-tracking quant fund slump 15.7% in the week ended July 17, according to data seen by Bloomberg. HanTak Investment Management suffered an estimated 16.1% loss on a similar strategy. The CSI 1000 Index plunged more than 12%, its worst week since February 2024.

The reversal began around June 29, when the high-momentum growth stocks that had powered gains through the first half of 2026 suddenly fell out of favor. The slump in overseas technology shares quickly cascaded through the global tech supply chain, while falling margin-financing balances in China, anxiety over liquidity being drained by large initial public offerings, and broader deleveraging further soured risk appetite. Market volatility was roughly 50% higher than in 2025, magnifying the damage to portfolios. Before the drawdown, High-Flyer's flagship CSI 1000 Quant Multi-Strategy No 1 had beaten the benchmark by an annualized 24 percentage points since its inception nearly eight years ago.

In response to the turmoil, more than 10 Chinese hedge funds—including both quantitative and discretionary managers—have announced plans in 2026 to subscribe to their own products with proprietary capital, a move aimed at bolstering investor confidence. The pace of these announcements has accelerated in July as losses mounted. The crisis underscores how quickly AI-linked positioning reversals punish even algorithmic models designed to exploit market inefficiencies.

For architects: this is not directly an AI infrastructure story, but it signals fragility in the AI capex supply chain. If Chinese wealth-allocators are retracting—deleveraging momentum trades, cutting margin financing—expect downstream pressure on orders for chips, power, and cooling. High-Flyer had been one of the largest backers of DeepSeek; financial stress here could slow expansion.
