Baidu GPU Cloud Explodes 283% YoY; AI Business Now 50% of Revenue as Search Declines 19%

Baidu reported Q2 2026 earnings on August 18 showing a sharp structural shift away from search advertising toward AI infrastructure. GPU Cloud revenue surged 283% year over year to an unspecified amount within the RMB 7.3 billion ($1.08 billion) AI Cloud Infrastructure segment, which itself grew 50% YoY. This marks the fourth consecutive quarter of triple-digit GPU Cloud growth, now accelerating from 184% growth in Q1. CEO Robin Li emphasized that Baidu's AI-powered business has become the core: RMB 12.5 billion of AI revenue now accounts for half of Baidu's RMB 25.2 billion general-business revenue.

The business mix inversion highlights what hyperscalers are building for: Baidu's core AI business includes GPU Cloud Infrastructure (up 50%), AI Applications (up 3%), and Apollo Go autonomous robotaxi operations. The growth is demand-driven: Baidu cites mounting demand for public cloud-based AI compute, expansion across internet services, autonomous driving, smartphones, financial services and embodied AI. Qianfan, Baidu's model-as-a-service platform, saw external customer revenue grow ninefold year over year. Meanwhile, online marketing revenue, Baidu's legacy business, declined 19% YoY, confirming that advertising is under sustained pressure as users migrate toward AI chatbots and agentic interfaces.

The infrastructure thesis shows up in capex. Baidu's capital expenditures tripled year over year to $1.69 billion, pushing free cash flow negative $1.18 billion despite positive operating cash flow for four consecutive quarters. That capex burn is deliberate: Baidu is investing to secure domestic GPU supply (the company is advancing Kunlun M100 and M300 chips for inference at scale) and to build cloud capacity across geographies. For CTO teams evaluating vendor diversity beyond NVIDIA in U.S. clouds, Baidu's quarterly GPU Cloud acceleration signals that non-U.S. cloud providers are scaling inference capacity rapidly, but at massive capex cost. The 283% growth is real; the sustainability of that growth depends on whether Baidu's hyperlocal AI flywheel (models, applications, robotaxis, cloud) compounds faster than capex depreciates.
