Anthropic has signed a $10 billion, six-year compute procurement agreement with Volta Infra Holdings, a newly-founded AI cloud infrastructure startup backed by NVIDIA. The deal secures 121 megawatts of critical IT load at a facility in Tydal, Norway, operated by ex-crypto-miner Bitdeer Technologies, powered entirely by renewable hydroelectric energy. Delivery occurs in two phases: December 31, 2026 and March 31, 2027. The facility will be outfitted exclusively with NVIDIA's latest Vera Rubin architecture, with hardware supplied by Dell Technologies.
Volta, founded in January 2026 by former Brookfield Asset Management executives Ricard Boada and Sofia Gumuzio, has raised $300 million in venture capital from Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter Capital, NVIDIA, and Michael Dell, valuing the startup at $2.4 billion. The firm claims a 1GW near-term pipeline and a 5GW target by 2030. Bitdeer signed a 16-year lease worth ~$4.7 billion in base-term revenue with an 8-year renewal option that could push total value to ~$8 billion over 24 years. The deal is backed by $1.3 billion in J.P. Morgan-arranged credit support.
This reflects a shift in how frontier AI labs are securing compute: instead of renting from public cloud providers, they are committing multiyear, multibillion-dollar contracts directly to infrastructure startups and vertically-integrated operators. For architects: the shift from pay-as-you-go cloud to long-term fixed-capacity contracts signals confidence in sustained AI demand but locks infrastructure producers into multi-decade commitments at fixed prices. Vera Rubin's dominance in these megawatt-scale deals (alongside similar commitments by other labs) de facto extends NVIDIA's architectural lock-in.
